Footnote to Youth Essay

A. PLOT Dodong wanted to marry Teang and asked his father’s permission. Thinking that since they are young, their love would be short, he allowed them to get married. After nine months, Teang gave birth to a child named Blas. For six consecutive years, a new child came along. Teang did not complain even thought she secretly regretted being married at an early age. Sometimes she even wondered if she would have the same life if Lucio, her other suitor who was nine years older than Dodong, was the one she married. Lucio has had no children since the time he married. When Teang and Dodong were twenty they looked like they were fifty. When Blas was 18, he told his father that he would marry Tona. Dodong did not object, but tried to make Blas think twice before rushing to marriage – because Dodong doesn’t want Blas to end up like him. It simply tells the story of an older person who made a mistake in the past who ended up with a not so pleasurable life. Then he had a son who is like him when he was young. His son is hasty in making the decision to get married, just like he was when he was 17. Despite this, Dodong did not – and could not – stop Blas from marrying Tona. Therefore, he didn’t object. Instead, he just reminded him that Blas is still very young and might as well think twice before rushing to marriage. But, as the ending goes: â€Å"Youth must triumph†¦ now. Love must triumph†¦ now. As long ago did youth and love triumphed for Dodong. And then†¦ life. B. Lessons I Learned: 1. It is always easy to get married but is never easy having a big responsibility. So, one must always think, not only twice but more times, to really understand what he/she will be encountering or simply, to think it over and consider the future before making up your mind. 2. Marriage is something that is taken seriously. Because marriage aside from being a sacrament is something that is full of responsibilities, when you decide to get married and you do marry someone, there is no turning back. To the youth, there is lots of things that should be taken into consideration before marrying of course including their readiness to take the responsibilities of raising a family and being able to respond to their needs. Because marriage is not a move that they can cancel when they feel like doing so. 3. Parents must guide their children. As they are still a child teach them the right things to do. Parents must not let their child to do the same bad things that they have done in their past. 4. Do not let things pass so fast. Everything we wanted most will come right on time, thus, creating greater fulfilment and contentment in life. Meaning, what life may offer is too different from what we want in a rush. C. Questions: 1. In what way does the title suitable to the story? 2. What the carabao represent dodong life in the story of footnote to youth? 3. How does Jose Garcia Villa describe the youth in the story of footnote to youth?

Health Care System: Private or Public Essay

Main Argument: Is America’s health-care system better than Canada’s? Thoresen, S. T. , & Fielding, A. (2011). Universal health care in Thailand: Concerns among the health care workforce. Health Policy, 99(1), 17-22. Retrieved from https://0-www-clinicalkey-com. catalog. lib. cmich. edu/ Stian H. Thoresen and Angela Fielding, authors of the article â€Å"Universal health care in Thailand: Concerns among the health care workforce†, write about the controversial topic of public health care from the Thai health care professionals perspective. The article is based off of interviews with health care professionals who work in dealing with patients who are covered by public health care. One quote, â€Å"Health care professionals at public hospitals, particularly in rural areas, have experienced up to a doubling in the number of daily out-patients; many with superficial symptoms,† is what Thoresen and Fielding were under the impression of after the interviews. They also followed up with another quote stating, â€Å"While the improved access to health care provisions was welcomed, questions regarding the appropriateness of seeking medical advice were raised. This specific article is perfect for my topic in a number of ways. Thoresen and Fielding bring up their findings perfectly because they use their interviews with professionals who work in public health care to back up their argument. This would be a great source for my paper because not only is it a real life example of public health care, it is another country with public health care which would show that the point is to not bash the Canadian health care system, but to show an international comparison. The two authors stated, â€Å"There are potentials for health care professionals to congregate in the private sector and urban areas where workloads are perceived to be less demanding. † Relating back to a previous quote, it was understood that public health care equals more health care facilities populated with patients, whereas with private, it seems it is not so crowded which can lead one to believe that patients are only seeking care when absolutely needed. Thoresen and Fielding bring up a debatable argument that is universal to all (private and public health care owners) and present their findings appropriately. Funds have been set in place to build what he explained as a â€Å"public-private partnership†. This type of health care system is all made possible because of a philanthropy type fund from different organizations. Dolan explains, â€Å"The fund will rely on $87 million in loans from Morgan Stanley in exchange for tax credits to build 500 new affordable housing units and eight new health centers serving 75,000 people. † Dolan’s article, â€Å"U. S. news: Public-private fund aims at health care, housing gap†, would fit in my paper as an example how people can make the best out of private health care. Private versus public health care is so controversial due to the fact that one party, whether it be the patients or professionals, are going to suffer expense wise. Of course private health care is more costly for the average person than public health care; Dolan explains a way for both the people of private health care, as well as health care services to get a fair end of the deal. He explains the idea well due to the fact that solves the problem by bringing up an existing way to help out with private health care. Quotes from this article could easily be included into the topic of my paper. Dolan, rather than a farfetched idea like switching to private health care overnight, approaches the argument with more encouragement. Culyer, A. J. (1989). The normative economics of health care finance and provision. Oxford Journals, 5(1), 34-58. A. J. Culyer, writer of the article â€Å"The normative economics of health care finance and provision†, better explains many fine points of public health care. Culyer explains that while many believe that public health care comes along with a lot of excess spending, the real crisis is the â€Å"underfunding†. Since the government acts as the main source of funding for health care, it actually can work against the common good of the people. A. J. states that the concern of underfunding has given rise to bring up proposals for reform which includes a greater role for private insurance, out-of-pocket payments, and private health care. Although A. J. Culyer’s article is wrote in response to the medical ‘crisis’ of the UK, it still would act as a great example to show positive aspects of private health care. It is true that many believe that public health care has a lot of excess spending, but apparently, a big problem in this particular type of health care is the underfunding. Culyer’s article would be crucial in my paper because he proposes another example that would make one question public health care. It is true that the government is the main source of funds in public health care, but when assets are going towards other organizations as well money can become split up and threatened. Culyer incorporates this idea without coming off too strong, but rather makes the public health care system questionable.  Berman, M. (n. d. ). Although the main focus has been the benefits of private health care, Micah Berman offers insight on why public health care works for some countries. This article is written specifically on focuses of the U. S. health care reform in 2011. The cost of medical care in the U. S. and the Affordable Act of 2010 are two of the main topics discussed in the article. The author’s main point is that the U. S. should focus on the prevention of chronic disease, instead of treatment when those diseases appear. Berman genuinely believes that this type of reform would cut medical costs drastically. The point of my paper is not to come off demanding but informational with many sources which is why another side to the health care system is essential. Micah Berman has one quote in the article that really caught my attention, â€Å"We don’t have a health care system in America. We have a sick care system. If you get sick, you get care. But precious little is spent to keep people healthy in the first place. † It may be true that the U. S. has some of the best health care services and technology in the world, but it may also have some of the most demanding patients as well. People seem to be so focused on what types of characteristic a better health care, or in their hopes, a cheaper health care, would have, that they forget to take care of themselves in the process.

Be global and act local Essay

Explain the need for an MNC to â€Å"be global and act local.† How can a firm design its organization to enable this? In today’s business environment, globalization opens doors to new opportunities. More and more companies are going global, but not all companies are getting enough advantage of going global. Reason being, many firms are unable to respond to the local market. The company design that is in place fails to meet the needs and expectations of local consumers. A product which is very success takes into consideration the people they are soliciting and make sure the product is acceptable for the local market. A firm must make sure the company has leadership that represents the local market and allow them some freedom to meet the needs of the people. Discuss the implications of the relative centralization of authority and decision making at headquarters versus local units or subsidiaries. How would you feel about this variable if you were a subsidiary manager? Two major problems in reporting for subsidiaries must be considered: inadequate management information systems and the non-comparability across countries of the performance data needed for evaluation purposes. As an international manager, what would make you suggest restructuring your firm? What other means of direct and indirect monitoring systems do you suggest? As an international manager, I would feel the need to restructure my firm if it is inefficient, I see conflicts among the units, if there is poor communication and if several people have the same responsibilities. I would make sure to keep an eye on the financials of the firm and evaluate the foreign affiliates. I would make sure to take into account the market I am monitoring and make sure the data provided is comparable data. What is the role of information systems in the reporting process? Discuss the statement â€Å"Inadequate MIS systems in some foreign affiliates are a control problem for MNCs.† The role of information systems in the reporting process is to provide top management with accurate and timely information regarding sales, production and financial results to be able to compare actual performance with goals and to take corrective actions where necessary. The statement â€Å"Inadequate MIS systems in some foreign affiliates are a control problem for MNCs† means that some less developed countries are not used to the sophisticated information generation, analysis and reporting systems. They do not collect and  evaluate the same information are more developed countries and make it hard to compare data. The information collected depends on the culture and government in the country. Why is the HRM role so much more complex, and important, in the international context? The role of the HRM is so much more complex and important in the international context because they have to find employees to merge the local with the global. They have to find people who understand the company and are willing to relocate to share this knowledge with others. They are also challenged with finding local people who can help grow the company. The HRM is responsible for recruiting, training and compensating skilled employees. They have to understand the local laws, culture and what they practice. Explain the common causes of expatriate failure. What are the major success factors for expatriates? Explain the role and importance of each. The causes of expatriate failure include: poor selection based on inappropriate criteria, inadequate preparation before assignment, alienation from headquarters, inability of manager or family to adapt to local environment, inadequate compensation package, and poor programs for career support and repatriation. The major success factors include proper planning, training and assessment. Do not give up on the plan and follow it all the way through.

Arch of titus

The Arch provides one of the few contemporary depictions of Temple period artifacts. [6][7] The seven-branched menorah and trumpets are clearly depicted. It became a symbol of the Jewish diaspora. In a later era, Pope Paul IV made it the place of a yearly oath of submission. Jews refuse to walk under it. [citation needed] The menorah depicted on the Arch served as the model for the menorah used on the emblem of the state of Israel. [citation needed]However, when the existence of modern State of Israel was formally declared, the entire Roman Jewish community spontaneously gathered by the arch and in joyful celebration, walked backwards under the arch to symbolize beginning of the long-awaited redemption from the Roman Exile. [8] The inscription in Roman square capitals reads: SENATVS POPVLVSQVE ·ROMANVS DIVO ·TITO ·DIVI ·VESPASIANI ·F(ILIO) VESPASIANO ·AVGVSTO (Senatus Populusque Romanus divo Tito divi Vespasiani filio Vespasiano Augusto) which means The Roman Senate and People (dedicate this) to the divine Titus Vespasianus Augustus, son of the divine Vespasian. The opposite side of the Arch of Titus received new inscriptions after it was restored during the pontificate of Pope Pius VII by Giuseppe Valadier in 1821. The restoration was intentionally made in travertine to differentiate between the original and the restored portions. The inscription reads: INSIGNE  · RELIGIONIS  · ATQVE  · ARTIS  · MONVMENTVM VETVSTATE  · FATISCENS PIVS  · SEPTIMVS  · PONTIFEX  · MAX(IMVS) NOVIS  · OPERIBVS  · PRISCVM  · EXEMPLAR  · IMITANTIBVS FVLCIRI  · SERVARIQVE  · IVSSIT ANNO  · SACRI  · PRINCIPATVS  · EIVS  · XXIIII (Insigne religionis atque artis, monumentum, vetustate fatiscens: Pius Septimus, Pontifex Maximus, novis operibus priscum exemplar imitantibus fulciri servarique iussit. Anno sacri principatus eius XXIV) (This) monument, remarkable in terms of both religion and art, had weakened from age: Pius the Seventh, Supreme Pontiff, by new works on the model of the ancient exemplar ordered it reinforced and preserved. †¢ In the year of his sacred rulership the 24th †¢ 1The Arch of Titus is a 1st-century honorific arch[1] located on the Via Sacra, Rome, just to the south-east of the Roman Forum. It was constructed in c. 82 AD by the Roman Emperor Domitian shortly after the death of his older brother Titus to commemorate Titus victories, including the Siege of Jerusalem in 70 AD. The Arch of Titus has provided the general model for many of the triumphal arches erected since the 16th century—perhaps most famously it is the inspiration for the 1806 Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France, completed in 1836. The arch is large with both fluted and unfluted columns, the latter being a result of 19th century restoration. [2] The spandrels on the upper left and right of the arch contain personifications of victory as winged women. Between the spandrels is the keystone, on which there stands a female on the East side and a male on the West side. [2] Detail of the central soffit coffers The soffit of the axial archway is deeply coffered with a relief of the apotheosis of Titus at the center. The sculptural program also includes two panel reliefs lining the passageway within the arch. Both commemorate the joint triumph celebrated by Titus and his father Vespasian in the summer of 71. The south panel depicts the spoils taken from the Temple in Jerusalem. The Golden Candelabra or Menorah is the main focus and is carved in deep relief. Other sacred objects being carried in the triumphal procession are the Gold Trumpets and the Table of Shew bread. [2] These spoils were likely originally colored gold, with the background in blue. [2] In 2012 the Arch of Titus Digital Restoration Project discovered remains of yellow ochre paint on the menorah relief. [3] The north panel depicts Titus as triumphator attended by various genii and lictors, who carry fasces. A helmeted Amazonian, Valour, leads thequadriga or four horsed chariot, which carries Titus. Winged Victory crowns him with a laurel wreath. [2] The juxtaposition is significant in that it is one of the first examples of divinities and humans being present in one scene together. This contrasts with the panels of the Ara Pacis, where humans and divinities are separated. [2] The sculpture of the outer faces of the two great piers was lost when the Arch of Titus was incorporated in medieval defensive walls. The attic of the arch was originally crowned by more statuary, perhaps of a gilded chariot. [2] The main inscription used to be ornamented by letters made of perhaps silver, gold or some other metal At the inside of the arch are two panels with reliefs. One depicts the triumphal procession with the spoils taken from the Second Temple in Jerusalem the seven-branched candelabrum or Menorah, the silver trumpets and the Table of the Shewbread. The other one shows Titus in a chariot accompanied by the goddess Victoria and the goddess Roma. The Arcus Titi, or Arch of Titus, was ostensibly erected to honor Titus and his father Vespasian because of their victories in the first Jewish War and their triumphal procession in AD 71. [1] The monument was built sometime after Titus’ death in AD 81. The arch sits at the eastern end of the Roman Forum at the intersection of the Sacra Via with a road leading up from the Coliseum. [2] No ancient sources describe or even mention the arch, a fact that leaves the history and interpretation of the arch with significant gaps. [1] The exact period of construction is unknown, with the majority opinion being that it was built during the reign of Titus’ brother, Domitian. [1] The arch may also have been constructed after Domitian had been assassinated, during the rule of Nerva and Trajan. [3] The arch was constructed of Pentelic marble on a travertine foundation. [1] The dimensions of this arch are 15. 4 meters tall, 13. 5 m. wide, and 4. 75 m. deep. The archway is 8. 3 m. high and 5. 36 m. wide. [1] Above the archway is a simple entablature with inscription, preserved only on the eastern, Coliseum side:

Case Study Analysis Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Case Study Analysis Paper - Essay Example He succeeded in recruiting fifteen trainees. He scheduled the trainee orientation to start from 15th of June. The new recruits were expected to be on job by the month of July. Carl Robins didn’t think of the essentials for the scheduled training till Monica Carrolls enquired about training schedule, orientation, manuals, policy booklets, physicals, drug tests, and a host of other issues. Carl Robins still didn’t do the review of the schedule and didn’t update its progress. When later in May, he checked the new trainee file to finalize the paperwork needed for the orientation, he found that some of the new trainees did not have applications completed or had their transcripts on file, and none of them had been sent to the clinic for the mandatory drug screen. He also found that there were only three copies of the orientation manuals and even they were not properly arranged. When he checked the training hall he found that Joe, from technology services was setting up computer terminals. When the event log was looked into, it was found that the training room was already reserved for the entire month of June for computer training seminars for the new database software implementation and was not available for the orientation to be conducted. The basic problem that the whole process faced was the lack of experience of Carl Robins as a recruiting officer. Though he managed to do the campus recruitment resulting in the intake of fifteen trainees, he couldn’t arrange properly for the processes leading to their intake. His inexperience stopped him from doing accurate planning for the training of the intakes. He also didn’t take advice from superiors or referred any previous records to get acquainted of the key procedures involved. Carl Robins didn’t take care to have a proper schedule for the whole process. The basic theory of bifurcation of the whole target into differentiated processes and planning them separately

Race and Racism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Race and Racism - Essay Example Thesis statement: An investigation by exploring the factors, historical evolution, and ways that changed the meaning of race to racism. I. The factors that change the meaning of race throughout history The factors that change the meaning of race mainly include phenotypic /geographic features, cultural characteristics, ethnic characteristics, and socio-economic status. A. Phenotypic /geographic features: One can easily identify that the phenotypic characteristics of human race is closely related to its physiological properties which deeply influence behaviour traits and genetic characteristics. To be specific, the phenotypic characteristics of a race differentiate the same from other races. But the phenotypic features that can be seen among different races are not based upon scientific foundation (Rattansi, 2007, p.75). Still, the physical features that can be seen among the members of different human groups are different. From a different angle of view, the phenotypic characteristics of a specific race are forwarded to the next generation by the means of inheritance. Besides, this continuation of genetic peculiarities undergoes modification and deeply influenced hereditary and environmental factors in general. The geographic features that can be seen among different races are closely related to their surroundings. These geographic features are helpful to differentiate and identify the similarities and differences among different races with innumerable numbers of genetic features. B. Cultural characteristics: The cultural characteristics acquired by different races are indebted to its origin, growth and development. Besides, the term/concept of culture was originated in Europe (18th and 19th Centuries) and is related to the sphere of improvement in different fields of human development. The concept of cultural characteristics within the evolution of different races can be defined as the development through education, by means of folklore culture or literature. E thnic groups can be defined on the basis of specific cultural characteristics (Ritzer, 2009, p.439). To be specific, the people who share certain genetic and cultural characteristics can be termed under a specific ethnic group. Within this scenario, cultural characteristics of the evolution of race transformed itself into national aspirations. Later in 20th century, the term culture acquired importance in the field of anthropology. The importance of cultural characteristics of a specific race can be evaluated as the human capacity to encompass almost all the experiences and to act according basic instincts and to transfer it into imagination and creativity. In addition, the cultural characteristics are closely related to the living condition of different races. After the World War II, the term cultural characteristics acquired a different meaning and importance by connecting it with the development of human race as a whole. C. Ethnic characteristics: The ethnic feature of different races within human race is an important factor that did change the meaning of race throughout history. For instance, one’s ethnic feature helps one to differentiate oneself from other races or to find similarities within one’s own race. Besides, the ethnic feature helps different races to create cohesiveness within a specific ethnic

Contemporary Developments in Business and Management Dissertation

Contemporary Developments in Business and Management - Dissertation Example The dedicated food service worker, chef or manager, almost always finds it to be a rewarding, lifelong career. Thus, so many cookbooks written by these chefs have been published and almost all of them shout out and proclaim their love for this art as if they have finally discovered their nirvana. To the nutritionist, however, food is considered a means of therapy and in hospitals, food is one means of attaining recovery to health. Other than financial rewards, running a restaurant gives to its owner another high i.e. the opportunity to meet all kinds of people and to satisfy their palates via the use of their culinary talents. The restaurant business can be financially rewarding if the restaurateur comes to it prepared with all the knowledge and training and the management skills culled from years of academic training in management or hands-on-training on the same business. So many restaurant entrepreneurs have found their pot of gold in this business with the effect that myriads of other people are encouraged to follow suit. " According to the National Restaurant Association data, the industry is comprised mostly of small businesses. There were almost 731,000 locations offering food service in the USA as of 1993. It is estimated that almost half of all adults are food service patrons on a typical day, and over 43% of the consumers' food dollar goes to meals and snacks away from home. The industry is a major employer- more than 9 million are employed in food service, and employment is expected to reach over 12 million by the year 2005. In 1993, sales of restaurants of all types topped $236 billion" (Alonzo 1996, p. v).
